4 Essential Ingredients to Achieve True Success as a Stylist

Believe it or not, the secrets to finding massive success as a stylist have nothing to do with the color wheel or formulation. It is so much more than that.

Think about it this way: maybe you’ve gotten caught up in the hype of “If I take one more cutting class or one more balayage class, then I’ll be successful.”

How’s that working out?

Not great, right? Because it isn’t integral to your success. Clients don’t come to see you for your killer haircuts. They come for the experience you provide.

Luckily, there are four key ingredients that you can tap into on the back end of your business to achieve massive success.

Work with a purpose

No matter what you do, it’s important to work with a destination and a goal in mind. A lot of people say, “I want to make a lot of money,” but working for the dollar is one of the most dissatisfying purposes because you will never feel truly fulfilled.

Try working towards a lifestyle or a purpose. This will change from person to person, so it’s okay if your lifestyle or purpose doesn’t look like your coworker’s.

Maybe your purpose is to create a life where you can spend more time with your family. Or where you can travel the world as an educator. Perhaps it’s to do hair for free once a month for people who can’t afford to come into the salon. Or it’s an expensive vacation every year.

Whatever your purpose is, keep it front of mind when you work on and in your business.

Work towards your passion

If you aren’t doing something you love, you will never be successful. It’s as simple as that.

Even if you have a job everybody else envies, if you don’t love it, it doesn’t matter. You will never achieve your purpose.

But if you work with your purpose, your passion, and move towards a goal, success will always find you.

So how do you find your passion? Think about what lights you up. What kind of service do you love to see on your books because it makes you feel creative and fulfilled? Or do you love educating other stylists and salon owners on how to better their skills or businesses?

Identify your passion and make sure you include it in your everyday business life to find success.

Have the confidence you’ll get there

This is the piece that’s missing for most people. You might have the desire, the passion, and the purpose, but if you don’t feel confident that it will happen, it won’t.

So often, people say, “I want to be an educator, but I don’t know if anyone will come to see me” or “I want to be a salon owner, but I don’t know if I’ll ever have enough money.”

Part of confidence is fake it ‘til you make it. Feeling the fear and doing it anyway.

Like Steve Harvey says, the most successful people in the world are those who take risks and are willing to lose it all. While people who play it safe? They never get there.

Confidence isn’t a skill most of us are born with. To help tap into your confidence, sit down and write 10 awesome things about you. It doesn’t have to be you as a stylist. It can be you as a friend, a coworker, a family member, a partner. Start celebrating that success and your confidence will grow from there.

Be on the quest for more.

The answer to the question, “When will I get there” is…never. If you want to find massive success, you constantly have to be looking for more. It’s an endless cycle of long-term growth. Of asking how you can better yourself.

The key to successful people is that they never stop. They keep asking, “What can I do next to keep myself moving forward?”

We as humans are programmed to be constantly learning. When we stop learning, we feel like we’re in a rut. That’s why it’s crucial to be constantly educating yourself.

If you get to the place where you think, “If I take another haircutting class, I’m going to lose my mind,” do it anyway. It’s not so much about seeing that haircut again. It’s about seeing all the love and passion for what we do.

Success might come for those who work for it…but it definitely comes if you find your purposes, your passion, your confidence, and you’re always on the quest for more.
