3 Ways to Start Making More Money as a Stylist

We’ve all been in a position where we need to make more money as a hair stylist fast, right? But it feels like the only solution is to work 24/7 behind the chair and risk burnout.

Not any more.

You joined this industry to create a beautiful life for yourself, not to spend 12 (or more!) hours behind the chair every single day, trying to earn enough money to make ends meet.

Luckily, there are three key ways you can start making more money as a stylist without sacrificing more time. Let’s dig in!

#1. Improve your service to increase your income.

We’ll be honest: this is the best way to increase the money you take home without adding more hours behind the chair. But how exactly do you do this without increasing your prices and possibly losing your clients?

Uplevel your guest experience

This is going to look different depending on your target market and business, but think custom amenities, complimentary in-salon treatments, or other things that your target market thinks is a huge value.

Offer distinct, staggered price points for upsells

If you decide to uplevel your guest experience even more and offer, let’s say, in-salon conditioning treatments, do yourself one better and offer small services at staggered price points that will appeal to every budget. For example, you could offer a $5, a $10, and a $15 hair mask add-on at the shampoo bowl to help your client repair damage. Having distinct prices at various levels means your clients will always find one that appeals to them.

Lean into retail

If you think retail is dead, think again. Clients are still buying products, but unless buying from you is easy, they’re heading to Amazon. To up your retail sales (and get more money in your pocket!), walk through your retail sales experience as a guest. What could you streamline to ensure when you put that bottle of shampoo down in front of them, they cannot say no?

#2. Get over your fear of selling

If the idea of selling makes you quake in your boots, we totally get it. Luckily, there’s an easy way to get over that fear: practice.

But before you can practice, you need to create verbiage that sounds like you. Why? Because if it doesn’t flow naturally in your own voice, it’s going to put your clients off.

So start thinking about why the products or services you want to sell are so important and what you love about them. Write it down in your own voice: don’t try to sound fancy or what you think a salesperson sounds like. Make it sound like you because that’s who your clients want to hear from.

After you’ve got your script, practice. Practice, practice, practice. The more you practice, the more confident you become, and the better you’ll be able to sell and make more money behind the chair.

Once you know your offer inside out, you’ll appear even more confident and the sales will just roll in.

#3. Make your sales plan

You know how  to uplevel your services, you know what you want to say so you can sell them to your clients. Now it’s time to set your daily sales goals and figure out how you want to achieve them with each guest.

First, you have to know how much you want to make this year. Then take how many weeks are left in the calendar year and subtract any weeks of vacation you’re planning on taking. Next, divide your annual income goal by the number of weeks you’re planning to work. This is your weekly income goal.

To figure out how much you need to make each day, divide your weekly income goal with how many days you’re planning on working each week.

Got your final number? Now look back at step 1 and figure out how many services and upgrades you need to sell to achieve that number.
