4 Ways to Grow Your Salon Business on Social Media

Have you noticed how social media has shifted in the last six months? And even more so over the last year? Two years?

Maybe you’ve been tempted to stop posting until everything feels normal again, or you’re just not sure what to do, so you just keep doing what you’re doing.

We’ll be honest with you, friend…that’s a huge waste of your most precious resources, time and money.

It’s time to stop wasting those precious resources and get set up with a social media strategy that works with what today’s customer craves.

How? Let’s dig in!

Master video marketing

Let’s face the elephant in the room…video is scary. But it’s also coming in big right now, meaning it’s more important than ever to get comfortable in front of the camera.

Step 1: Write a script. You don’t have to be Shakespeare, but knowing what you want to say and how to say it will help keep your video short, succinct, and impactful. It’ll cut down on the chances of you going into a tangent about something else or forgetting what you want to say mid-sentence.

Step 2: Batch record when you’re feeling good. You know those days when you just feel good? Those are the best days to record because you’re feeling confident and that will come across on the screen.

Step 3: Don’t be afraid to be imperfect. Right now, social media is leaning towards authenticity, so if it isn’t 100% perfect, that’s okay!

Make a TikTok strategy

A salon leader we know and love DM’d us the other day and said, “I don’t know what to put on TikTok. I feel so ridiculous dancing around but I don’t know what else to do. Should I just do it anyway?”

If you’re wondering the same thing, we’ve got good news: you don’t have to be on top of the latest TikTok trends to create massive traction on the platform.

First, always, always, always speak to your target market. Not other stylists (unless that’s your target market), not every single person on the platform. Your target market.

Also, don’t forget to make it fun while adding value. Many of today’s consumers use TikTok as their guilty pleasure, so you should be able to provide fun and value with each thing you post. Think behind-the-scenes, routines, your biggest tips to solve your target market’s biggest problem.

Don’t be afraid to start slow with TikTok if you’re brand new to the platform. It’s better to show up with carefully cultivated content than blasting random videos to your followers.

Lean into Instagram reels

“Wait…aren’t reels and TikTok kind of the same thing?”

Well, that’s a conversation for a different post, but think of it this way: chances are your TikTok is starting from scratch, but you’ve already got some loyal followers on your Instagram, right? Meaning you’ve got a built-in, ready-to-engage audience who wants more content from you!

Lean towards short, fun videos for Instagram reels that are more oriented towards your existing followers and attracting new ones. Always entertain, educate, or inspire…never just inform.

And don’t forget, people show up on social media to be entertained and be social, so have some fun!

Master niche branding

Branding your business is important, but branding your business to especially attract your niched-down target market? Crucial.

Think about your dream client. (Not sure who that is yet? We can help you narrow it down in the Thriving Stylist Method!) What do they really want? Are they getting married and want the perfect look for their entire bridal party? Are they a work-from-home mom with gorgeous textured hair who dreams of a quick, polished style they can do fast?

Create branding that speaks to that person. Not just brides or work-from-home moms, but specifically what the dream client you want to attract into your chair wants to solve.
