How often do you put something uncomfortable or scary off for later? Until it’s the right time or moment, until the universe tells you you’ve got to take your shot NOW?
But you keep putting it off and putting it off, hoping that bolt of lightning will come shooting out of the sky and a thunderous voice will say, “It’s TIME!” someday, right?
Here’s the thing about somedays: they never happen.
Someday might feel like a safety zone; a place to hold your hopes and dreams until you can find the time to get organized, get ready, or just know that whatever you’re planning to do will fully work out.
But, real talk: letting things linger in the someday category means they never will.
If it’s something you want to make happen, like becoming a six-figure stylist, a hot brand educator, or a platform artist, all you have to do is ask the universe for what you want instead of waiting for it to drop your dream into your lap.
I want to dig into how to shift out of “someday” into the “make it happen” zone.
Know what you want
Depending on your perspective, deciding what you really want is either the easiest or the hardest part.
If you know that you’re meant to own the hottest salon in town or that teaching other stylists in your salon totally lights you up and you want to do it on the big stage, this part will be easy.
But if the idea of your future makes you more than a little uncertain,I want you to come back to why you joined this industry in the first place. Was it to have a fully flexible schedule and to live a holistically wealthy lifestyle where you could be home with your family on the weekends and still make six figures? Or maybe you wanted the bright lights lifestyle of a platform artist?
Check back in with yourself; is that still your goal? Is that what you want to make out of your career in this industry? If not, keep looking until you find whatever it is that lights you up.
Define it for yourself
Let’s stick with the idea that your dream is to become a wealthy stylist. What does that actually mean for you? Is it being home for dinner at 6 pm every night? Maybe it’s working longer days on Tuesdays and Thursdays so you can take three day weekends with your family. Or maybe it’s matching your partner’s office job schedule so you have more time to spend together.
Whatever your goals are, narrow them down. Get into the tiny details of where you want to be in your life and what you want to get out of it. Don’t get bogged down in what everybody else is doing or what you think you should be doing. This is your life, not theirs.
Once you can truly narrow down what you want to make out of your life, it’s so much easier to see these dreams as a reality…aka, less likely for you to put them on the shelf for someday.
Build your life around it
Here’s where the big work happens. Now that you know what you want to make happen in your life, break it down into annual, monthly, weekly, and even daily goals. (If you want to dig in more on how to do this, check out this post about how to plan your weeks!)
Sometimes making the shift from “someday” to “make it happen” can feel like going from zero to 60, so pace it out. Know what’s reasonable to accomplish in one year, one month, one week, but don’t be afraid to challenge yourself. You have more in you than you know.
Find a planner system, whether digital or paper, that works best for you and follow it. Plot out your schedule, find time to work on your goals, and stick to it.
Make it happen!
Make sure you watch for signs of “someday” sneaking back in: “Oh, I’d rather watch Netflix right now. I’ll do that tomorrow,” or “Building my website’s hard…I’ll just take a break and work on this later.”
All of these are signs that your big, beautiful goal is slipping back onto the “someday” shelf. Don’t let it. Hold yourself accountable by tracking your goals in your planner or even telling a loved one if they’re willing to be your accountability partner.
Stay strong and push past it. It will so be worth it once you’ve finally made those big, beautiful dreams come true.
If you’re looking for the right time to finally make that big dream come true, it’s now. Stop waiting on the bench, hoping that when “someday” arrives, it’ll make itself known. It’s here, it’s ready, and it’s waiting for you. Go make magic happen.
